According to media reports journalist Namal Perera and one of his “friends” from the British HC was apparently attacked and according to some reports attempted to be kidnapped.

For one thing I only believe half of it, simply because Sri Lankan journalists exaggerate. And a lot at that.

If anything the only thing the government and the opposition are good at is exaggeration. Another thing is that there are no independent journalists in Sri Lanka. If the UNP were on power and this attacked happened it would be a completely different set of people shouting “bloody murder” and the current people shouting and protesting would be busy defending the administration.

Most likely the bugger was threatened and a little beaten up by the looks of it. Cause if they were meant to be kidnapped they would have been kidnapped.

Another thing is the absurdity of it all. They attackers had come in a “White Van” and attacked the journalists when he was with his friend who works in a Foreign Mission. A couple of points are to be taken notice of;

  • The attackers have ensured maximum publicity and condemnation is guaranteed by assaulting a person with embassy connections.
  • They used a white van. You would think with all the notoriety on the White Vans who ever really make people disappear would have had their vans painted in another color by now.
  • How stupid the govt. has to be to conduct an act which even the most idiotic person with the lowest IQ can say is bad for the government. MR is no idiot. He ousted CBK and somehow made Ranil the laughing stock of the nation. He would surely have more sense than to use such obliviously stupid methods.
  • Timing of this incident seem to coincide with the blotched announcement of the Liberation of Mannar.

SO obviously it is someone opposed to the government doing all the high profile disappearances and kidnappings to make bad publicity. It may well be the LTTE. (Although I doubt that they’d be able to restrain themselves of short of blowing the head off some one). Another thing is none of the alleged victims seem to be able to ID his attackers or even voice their suspicions. (Other than giving an interview on Sirasa TV).

Most likely these attacks and kidnappings are done by some shadowy thugs hired by the UNP. UNP of are no saints when it comes to making people disappear. They’re single handedly responsible for the mess we’re in right now.

The sad thing is the buggers who got beaten up now think the govt. did it. And they would now start going after the government’s blood even if they weren’t at first.

So No. It’s not really that Bad. It’s Much, Much Worse.
